Introduction to the GIMP

GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.

GIMP is written and developed under X11 on UNIX platforms. But basically the same code also runs on MS Windows and Mac OS X.

GNU Image Manipulation Program ( the GIMP ) and Xvfb ( virtual framebuffer X server for X Version 11 from Xfree86) to produce a wide variety of royalty-free custom and semi-custom graphics, logos and clip art of various sorts.

There are some improvements over earlier distributions. The Net-Fu Scheme scripts have been updated to work with the 1.2.3 GIMP distribution. The display has been integrated and simplified. The thumbnails, sample image and interface to the script fu engine is driven by a .ini file. This file may be used with any PDB entry which opens up the universe of web controlled gimp based tools for the desktop.

The web interface is fully integrated with the X Font Server ( xfs ) and all registered fonts on the system are automagically  available to the user. The distribution includes the "traditional" net-fu fonts which are dynamically registered with xfs by the start/stop script

The Net-Fu-PHP distribution includes the net-fu web interface and cgi script, an init.d script to start and stop the GIMP and related servers, a customized gimprc_user script and the traditional fonts are included.
